Is a 2-bedroom apartment acceptable for a divorced father with 2 kids?

May 25th, 2010 | by admin |

My friend in California is getting divorced. He has 2 kids. If he wants 50% custody, how many bedroom must his apartment have?

My son is sharing custody of his children and he lives in a 1 bedroom apt. He has a futon in the front room where he sleeps and the the kiddos sleep in the bedroom.
It’s not the size of a home that makes it good, it’s the love and quality of care that make children happy, well adjusted and secure.

If the kids are the same sex, I think it would be ok to put them in one bedroom with twin beds. He should have a place for them to study, too. Desks or small tables. If court is checking out his place, it would be good to have some healthy menus and schedules made out for them to see. Schedules should include: wake up & breakfast times, school time, after school play, homework study time, dinner time, bath time, story time, prayer time, bedtime, etc. Then they can see he’s an organized Dad.

"Prayer time." Ugh. There are no laws that govern this issue, though individual judges may set expectations.

He should check with California law. It could depend on the sex of the children or age. I think as long as each child has a clean warm place to sleep it shouldn’t matter. Spending time with a loving father is what matters most.
