What do apartments check for when you fill out an application?

Recent Posts Recent Comments

I’m 23 and am looking to get my own apartment. I’ve lived with my mom my whole life so this would be my first apartment so I don’t have any rental history and my credit is definitely less than perfect. What do apartments check for when you try to rent one? I’m not looking to get like a fancy condo or something. Just a small one bedroom apartment that costs between $400-$500 a month rent. Nothing fancy. Think I’ll have a problem getting an apartment?

It really depends on the landlord.

Most will want to see some sort of rental history.

All will want to see that you pay your bills on time.

It’s easy to rent an apartment. A landlord in general is concerned about references from previous landlords and the credit report. SInce this is your first apartment I think that your ability to pay the rent will be the highest concern.

They will check your credit, criminal background and job history. They will also want to see paycheck stubs or call your employer to verify employment.

If your credit is bad, you may need your mom to cosign.

Landlords typically verify in this order: income, credit, references, criminal records. Where there are landlord "blacklists" available (any place there are landlord’s organizations), that usually ranks pretty high for verification, too.

Clean up your credit before you move into your own apt. There will be a great many expenses involved, and frankly, you cannot yet afford it, as proven by your credit. That $400/mo rent, by the time you add utilities, groceries, household expenses will easily run you closer to $1000/mo. More if you won’t settle for pbj’s and wieners & beans, and sleeping on the floor.

That’s before you buy a bed & bedding, dresser, table, chair, and some crockery & cutlery at a local garage sale.
