My roommates mom came for a visit and watched multiple drug deals going on across the street only one hour after sundown. This means that there is a main door for security before you can get to any of the apartments. There should also be some type of security near the parking area, even if that just means the area is well lit. Most of the time, this is enough to ward of any potential problems that might occur near inexpensive college apartments. Students still have to be careful, but these things can help and make parents more at ease when students choose not to live in the dorms where they are monitored and protected.As far as price goes, it varies. For the most part, cheap apartments for students are cheap for a reason. They are not always the best places, but they are usually quite alright for their intended purpose. College students are not always careful, so an immaculate place is not what most want to find anyway. When you have the ability to get three or four students into one apartment, many find the rent is more than reasonable, and that there is always security in numbers. Just remember that though the proximity to school is a great thing, the safety of each student is what is more important.I remember when I was young that I thought I wanted to get out of the small town I was living in so that I could move to the big city. I didn’t care which one, but several crossed my mind. I did leave, but I never ended up where I thought I would be, though that is usually how things go. Windows 7 makes a number of networking tasks a whole lot easier to tackle — one of which is sharing the music, movies, and photos stored on your computer with today’s network-ready TVs. If your fancy new flatscreen can connect to your wired or wireless network, it can probably also play your Windows 7 media.

To set things up, hit the Windows key and type streaming in the search box. Wait for Media streaming options to appear, then press enter. When the options window appears, look for your TV in the devices list. If the button to the right does not read “allowed,” click blocked and change it. As long as your TV supports DLNA, that’s all there is to it — now it’s just a matter of finding the right menu with your remote so you can start enjoying your videos!

You even have the option of limiting access to content. Only want videos you’ve rated 3 stars or better to be available on your living room TV? Don’t want your photos displayed there? No problem. Just click the customize… link and check or uncheck a few boxes.

Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten — and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we’ll bet it actually won’t take that long. That’s right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple’s officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it. So, Android Market, you’re next?

Qt, come the end of 2011, is to become a standard component of Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu currently, and in the upcoming 11.04 Natty Narwhal distribution, uses Gtk+, a competing toolkit maintained by the GNOME Foundation.

When Canonical announced Ubuntu’s shift away from the GNOME desktop manager in 11.04, the switch to Qt was almost a foregone conclusion; GNOME requires Gtk+, but Unity doesn’t — so why stick around? A better question to ask, though, is why Qt?

The odd, but overwhelmingly likely truth seems to be that Ubuntu is moving into the mobile sector. Unity was originally designed as a netbook or small-screen interface; and there’s no denying that Unity 2D, without its shiny bells and whistles, is designed for very low-powered devices, like cheap tablets and smartphones.

That’s where Qt enters the equation: Qt is the application framework used on Nokia’s Symbian and Maemo phones. Qt is also fully cross-platform, with support for Windows, Mac and Linux. With Qt, developers could write a single program for Ubuntu, and have it run on desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones.

But why oh why does Canonical even want to go into the mobile market? Has someone at the top lost their marbles?
