Looking for safe, intern-student housing for Fall 2008. Student Org. said 3rd and 97th is still a nice area, but I remember it being quite desolate a few years ago. Just want to be sure my walk to Lexington for subway is relatively safe, and envrions.
It’s a great spot to rent. My wife and I almst rented an apartment there about 4 years ago. It was borderline, but good enough. It’s been steadily improving. For a student its great. Just when you leave your apartment, walk south, not north. The trip to the subway is very safe as well. You’ve got nothing to worry about.
Yeah, i know the area quite well. Thats an ok area.. gets a bit rough once you hit around 110th

You are LITERALLY on the "border" between the Upper East Side and the beginnings of "El Barrio". 3rd Avenue and 97th Street JUST makes that border, and the area is safe….easy walk to the Lexington Avenue station on 96th Street.

it’s a nice downhill walk from the 96th/Lex subway, and a lot less desolate than it used to be, because of some high end residential buildings on 97th and Lex, and 96th and 3rd. plus, you’ve also got the Islamic Center and School on the northeast corner of 96th and 3rd. very safe, i’d live there in a second if given the choice. the only possible safety problems is if you go too far above 97th Street. it’s more interesting to go out to eat and drink below 96th anyway, so i don’t think you’ll have that problem…
